The word “practical” carries most of the weight in that estimate. Demonstrations at trade shows and viral clips of robots folding towels represent genuine engineering progress. They do not represent products that can handle the full scope of a real home, with its spatial unpredictability, its objects arranged for human hands, and its residents who will not reorganize their lives around a machine’s limitations. The gap between impressive and deployable is wide in robotics, and in the home environment it is wider than almost anywhere else.
Anderson’s estimate places practical home deployment no earlier than the late 2020s and, by the phrasing “five plus,” suggests she is not betting on a surprise acceleration from current trends. The hedge is the substance of the call. It signals that the variables driving the timeline are not primarily hardware, where progress is visible and trackable, but the harder, less photographable work of software robustness, real-world edge cases, and the safety tolerance required of a device sharing space with people in uncontrolled conditions.

The home environment is a distinct category of problem. A warehouse or a logistics facility has a fixed floor plan, consistent objects, and workflows that can be engineered around the machine’s constraints. A home has none of those properties. The layout varies by household, the objects are inconsistent and often fragile, and the tolerance for error approaches zero when the device is operating near the people who own it. Each of those properties pushes the timeline further from a warehouse timeline, which is already demanding, toward something harder.
The industrial and logistics track matters as the context for Anderson’s horizon. The current generation of humanoid hardware will almost certainly find its first deployments in controlled environments, where error tolerances are higher and the economics of a unit that fails occasionally are easier to absorb. Progress in those settings will matter for the home market eventually: cost curves will move, reliability data will accumulate, and software trained in structured environments will carry forward into less structured ones. But each of those transitions takes time that Anderson’s estimate implicitly prices in.
The promotional cycle around humanoid robotics tends to compress all of this. Capability demos are designed to impress, and they do. The engineering behind a robot that can walk across a stage and pick up a box is real. The less visible work, the software that handles the ten thousand variations of a kitchen, the certification and liability frameworks for a device that might injure someone, the cost structure that makes a unit affordable for a household rather than a corporation, does not travel as well as the demo clip. Anderson’s read reflects that less visible work.
What her estimate does not do is foreclose home robots before 2030. It locates the realistic horizon for something that functions as a product rather than a proof of concept. The question for anyone tracking the sector is whether the capability, cost, and safety curves move faster than the people building these machines currently believe. Anderson’s phrasing suggests she is not counting on that. The bet embedded in “five plus years” is that the remaining distance is real distance, not a promotional gap that a few more demos will close.
